LYRICS:
Spit on the ground, hold your breath
try to scare to scare yourself to death
bury your bones under the dirt
tear your drawers and rip your shirt
stomp your feet in disgust
curse the grey skies if you must
but you'll find when you are done
the blue sky's for everyone
Take up the wine and break your heart
give up the race before you start
drop your drawers and roll around
burn your house right to the ground
go to sleep hit your head
scream until your face is red
but you'll find when you are done
the blue sky's for everyone
blue skies, setting sun
cherry pie, bubble gum
lullabies to be sung
blue skies for everyone
so get right down on your luck
spin your wheels until you're stuck
bring out the blood and let it dry
stick a big needle in your eye
dry your tears and drop your drink
let me tell you what I think
I think you'll find when you are done
the blue sky's for everyone
blue skies, setting sun
cherry pie,bubble gum
lullabies to be sung
blue skies for everyone
there'll be blue skies for everyone
there'll be blue skies for everyone
there'll be blue skies for everyone
I'd like blue skies
I'd like blue skies
I'd like blue skies for everyone
there'll be blue skies for everyone
there'll be blue skies
there'll be blue skies.

Tracy Bonham - Mother Mother
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Xi8NvSetZc
Mother mother how's the family?
I'm just calling to say hello.
How's the weather? how's my father?
Am I lonely? heavens no.
Mother mother are ya listening? just a phone call to ease your mind.
Life is perfect, never better, distance making the heart grow fond.
When you sent me off to see the world,
were you scared that I might get hurt?
Would I try a little tobacco,
would I keep on hiking up my skirt?
I'm hungry,
I'm dirty,
I'm losing my mind...
Everything's fine!
I'm freezing,
I'm Starving,
I'm Bleeding death...
Everything's fine!
Yeah, I'm working, making money, I'm just starting to build a name.
I can feel it, around the corner, I could make it any day.
Mother mother can you hear me, sure I'm sober, sure I'm sane.
Life is perfect, never better, still your daughter, still the same.
If I tell you what you want to hear,
will it help you to sleep well at night?
Are you sure that I'm your perfect dear,
now just cuddle up and sleep tight.
I'm hungry,
I'm dirty,
I'm losing my mind...
Everything's fine!
I'm freezing,
I'm starving,
I'm bleeding to death...
Everything's fine!
I miss you,
I love you.

Ryan Adams - Dirty Rain
Dirty Rain-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A-Zcwdsl9fc
Last time I was here, it was rainin'
It ain't raining anymore
The streets were drowning, the waters waning
All the ruins were washed ashore
Now I'm just lookin' through the rubble
Tryin' to find out who we were
Last time I was here, it was rainin'
It ain't rainin' anymore.
Last time I was here, you were waiting
You're not waiting anymore.
The window's broke and the smoke's escaping...
All the books scattered across the floor.
And the church bells ringing through the sirens,
And your coat was full of bullet holes.
Last time I was here, you were waiting....
You ain't waiting anymore.
So
May the wind blow, may the moonlight know your name
So
Let the needle move the record 'round
'Til the walls cave in
And you and I are out there dancin' in the dirty rain
Last time I was here, it was rainin'
Like *you ain't never seen it rain
And your eyes were filled with terror and the smoke from the gasoline
As the stars exploded with gunfire....
I saw you smilin' just before....
Last time I was here, you were cryin'
You're not cryin' anymore.
So
May the wind blow, may the moonlight know your name
So
Let the needle move the record 'round
'Til the walls cave in
And you and I are out there dancin' in the dirty rain
Mmmm in the dirty rain.....
In the dirty rain.... mmm.....

My draft song: "He Left Me for Snooki"
(Must sing in thick, southern, drawl a la Hayes Carll's "She Left Me For Jesus twang....)
Here we go:
Here we go:
It’s my last night in Houston,
and I’m feeling ok,
‘cause I’m leaving this town
without herpes...
[stretch out the word 'herpes' as long as possible]
Lucky me…
[again, stretch this out as well]
Then, heavy on the guitar here:He left me for Sno----oki
He left me for Sno---oki,
but that’s alright with me..
yeah, that's alright with me...
pause
‘Cause you left me for Sno-oki,
when I wasn’t lookin’….
you were Facebookin’,
[bet you thought she was actually good lookin!]
[say the last sentence sort of slow and talk]
pause
then heavy on the guitar again here...
He left me for Sno----oki
He left me for Sno---oki,
but that’s alright with me..
yeah, that's alright with me...
Well, she’s a sad sight to see,
that good ‘ol Snooki,
‘bet she’s giving you VD,
when you’re making good ‘ol whoopee…..
[play around with the words here, maybe drop 'good']
[heavy on guitar here]
Well,
He left me for Sno----oki
He left me for Sno---oki,
but that’s alright with me…….
‘Cause now I’m making whoopee with Wookie…
Oh... he left me for Sno----oki
he left me for Sno---oki,
but that’s alright with me…….
‘Cause now I’m making whoopee with Wookie
and all I got was a bad case of…. fleas.
[last line of the song, say/sing slowly]
[Then, in slow talking voice... just start letting it rip.. ;-]
"Darlin’
If you wanted VD,
why didn’t tell me?
I mean, maybe we could have worked it out…"
or "Man, never knew you liked them short and stubby… and dumb and ugly."
or "man, I got all this education and all these degrees, and I'm cute and I'm funny and you won't even fuck me?" [sorry, that one is not PG-13]
And to that I say "thank god, amen, allelujah!" ;-)

Seth James - Thing for You
I had the pleasure of seeing Seth James a few weeks ago at The Dosey Doe in H-Town. He played with Cody Canada of Cross Canadian Ragweed. Yeah, it was an amazing show.
I don't think I've recovered yet.Check out Seth's tour dates here and here.
One of my favorites was "Thing for You" by Seth James. Listen to it hear. Lyrics below:
Well, we both been trying to fight it.
We've been sitting here all night long.
It's gettin' harder and harder to hide it.
I've never felt anything this strong.
So it can't be wrong.
Honey, it can't be wrong.
Now girl, we're in a situation
It's a problem that we have to address
I've got a long long list of inclinations
And if ya got anything to confess
Get it off your chest
Honey, get it off your chest.
Chorus:
I got a thing for you.
You got a thing for me.
Well, we should put our things together
And do what comes naturally
Don't even think about thinking
It's just the way it should be
I got a thing for you
You got a thang for me.
Well, I know you're feeling the feeling
Girl, you know what I'm talking about
Baby, I'm about to hit the ceiling
You got a vibe that you're putting out
You know you're putting out
Honey, there ain't no doubt
Repeat chorus.

Eric Hutchinson - Rock N Roll
I heard this song on the radio tonight.
I had never heard it before, although it's been out since 2008.
Something about it just got under my skin and made me want to dance...
Watch it here.
Lyrics below:
He's been waiting around for the weekend
Figuring which club to sneak in
Fancy drinks and fifty-dollar cover charge
Lately it's been a big hassle
Heineken and New Castle
To make sure he's fitting in and living large
Disregard the lies that he will tell
and what he's probably like 'cause
It's not hard his charm is gonna
Get him through the night
If he wanna rock he rocks
If he wanna roll he rolls
He can roll with the punches
Long as he feels like he's in control
If he wanna stay he stays
If he wanna go he goes
He doesn't care how he gets there
Long as he gets somewhere he knows oh no
ah na na na na na na na na na na na
ah na na na na na na na na na na na
See her heavy make up and cut t-shirt
Every girl out wants to be her
But they look the same already why adjust
Reading the magazine secrets
Forget the topical regrets
'Cause If she comes home all alone the nights a bust
It's a must the swivel in her hips
And the look she gives
It's all her trust if only in the morning
She knew where she lived
'Cause If she wanna rock she rocks
If she wanna roll she rolls
She can roll with the punches
Long as she feels like she's in control
If she wanna stay she stays
If she wanna go she goes
She doesn't care how she gets there
Long as she gets somewhere she knows oh no
ah na na na na na na na na na na na
ah na na na na na na na na na na na
And in a wink they're on the brink
From drink to drink and at the bar
With cash to blow
From shot to shot it's getting hot
Advance the plot to see how far
It's gonna go
All depends so ditch the friends
And grab a cab
Another chance for cheap romance
Doesn't count cause the room is spinning
Nothing to lose tonight they both are winning
And they fall in love as they fall in bed
They sing
If they wanna rock they rock
If they wanna roll they roll
They can roll with the punches
Long as they feel like they're in control
If they wanna stay they stay
If they wanna go they go
They don't care how they get there
Long as they get somewhere they know oh no
ah na na na na na na na na na na na...

Regina Spektor / Ben Folds - You Don't Know Me... At All
I've had this Regina Spektor/ Ben Folds song stuck in my head for a few days.
So, watch it here and you can get it stuck in your head, too ;-)
I wanna ask you -
Do you ever sit and wonder,
It's so strange
That we could be together for
So long, and never know, never care
What goes on in the other one's head?
Things I've felt but I've never said
You said things that I never said
So I'll say something that I should have said long ago:
(You don't know me)
You don't know me at all
(You don't know me)
You don't know me at all (at all)
You could have just propped me up on the table like a mannequin
Or a cardboard stand-up and paint me (paint me)
Any face that you wanted me
To be seen.
We're
Damned by the existential moment where
We saw the couple in the coma and
It was we were the cliché,
But we carried on anyway.
So, sure, I could just close my eyes.
Yeah, sure, trace and memorize,
But can you go back once you know
(You don't know me)
You don't know me at all
(You don't know me)
You don't know me at all (at all)
(You don't know me)
You don't know me at all
(You don't know me)
You don't know me
If I'm the person that you think I am (Ah ah ahh)
Clueless chump you seem to think I am (Ah ah ahhh)
So easily led astray,
An errant dog who occasionally escapes and needs a shorter leash, then
Why the fuck would you want me back?!
Maybe it's because
(You don't know me at all)
Ahhh ah
Ahhh ah
(You don't know me,
you don't know me.)
Ahhh ah
Ahhh ah
So, what I'm trying to say is
What (What?)
I'm trying to tell you
It's not gonna come out like I wanna say it cause I know you'll only change it.
(Say it.)
(You don't know me)
You don't know me at all
(You don't know me)
You don't know me at all (at all)
(You don't know me)
You don't know me at all
(You don't know me)
You don't know me at all (at all)
What?
(Mmmm, ohh oh
Ah ah ah ah ah
Aha ah ah ah
Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
Aha ah
Ah ah
Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah
Oh-oh-oh-oh oh ohh)

Chris Smither: No Love Today

I love this song called "No Love Today." Amazing performance of this song here on Vimeo.
HAPPY VETERAN'S OF LOVE DAY!
I don't know much, when I knew less,
And I was heartbroke for the first time,
I was drowning in my tears,
I went looking for a lifeline,
Trying to find some comfort,
A simple tender touch,
Searching for some little cure
That would not cost too much,
And I could hear that produce wagon on the street,
I could hear that farmer singing,
As I cried myself to sleep
CHORUS
I got ba-na-na, watermelon, peaches by the pound,
Sweet corn, mirleton, mo' better than in town,
I got okra, enough to choke ya,
Beans of every kind,
If hungry is what's eatin' you
I'll sell you peace of mind,
But this ain't what you came to hear me say,
And I hate to disappoint you,
But I got no love today,
I got no love today,
I got no love today,
No love today
I could not love to save myself
From lonesome desperation.
Everything I thought was love
Was worthless imitation.
My concept of commitment
Was to take all you could give,
I thought the cheapest thrills I loved
Were teachin' me to live,
But nothin' seemed to last or see me through
Nothin' but that little song
That I still sing for you.
CHORUS
No love today, none tomorrow,
Not now, not forever.
You can't see what comes for free,
I think you much too clever,
For your own good I will tell you
What's right before your eyes,
Intelligence is no defense
Against what this implies,
In the end no one will sell you what you need,
You can't buy it off the shelf,
You got to grow it from the seed,
CHORUS

The Avett Brothers: I and Love and You
I love this song by The Avett Brothers...
Watch it here and here on YouTube.
Load the car and write the note
Grab your bag and grab your coat
Tell the ones that need to know
We are headed north
One foot in and one foot back
But it don't pay, to live like that
So i cut the ties and i jumped the tracks
For never to return
Ah Brooklyn Brooklyn take me in
Are you aware the shape I'm in
My hands they shake my head it spins
Ah Brooklyn Brooklyn take me in
When at first I learned to speak
I used all my words to fight
With him and her and you and me
Oh but its just a waste of time
Yeah its such a waste of time
That woman shes got eyes that shine
Like a pair of stolen polished dimes
She asked to dance I said it's fine
I'll see you in the morning time
Ah Brooklyn Brooklyn take me in
Are you aware the shape im in
My hands they shake my head it spins
Ah Brooklyn Brooklyn take me in
Three words that became hard to say
I and love and you
What you were then, I am today
Look at the things I do
Ah Brooklyn Brooklyn take me in
Are you aware the shape I'm in
My hands they shake my head it spins
Ah Brooklyn Brooklyn take me in
Dumbed down and numbed by time and age
Your dreams to catch the world, the cage
The highway sets the travelers stage
All exits look the same
Three words that became hard to say
I and love and you
I and love and you
I and love and you

Madeleine Peyroux: I'm Alright....
I'm still feeling a little traumatized by the crazy roller coaster of events that unfolded in my life in 2009.
So I've got this tune stuck in my head today, and I'm dedicating it to myself:
Watch Madeleine Peyroux's "I'm Alright."
"I'm All Right"
He made me laugh
He made me cry
He smoked his stogies in bed
But I'm all right
I'm all right
I've been lonely before
I asked the boy for a few kind words
He gave me a novel instead
But I'm all right
I'm all right
I've been lonely before
It's fine, it's OK
It was wrong either way
I just wanted to say
There isn't much fun when you're drinking wine
He got drunk, he fell down
He threw a few of my things around
But I'm all right
I'm all right
I've been lonely before
I'd like to believe that it's easy to leave
But I have to conceive that wherever you are
You're still driving my car
Sticks and stones break my bones
But tears don't leave any scars
So I'm all alright
I'm all alright
I've been lonely before
Mmm...
I'm all alright
I'm all alright
I'm all alright
Yeah
He played solitaire in bed....
Used to blow bubbles in bed...
He sang Christmas songs in bed....

Pearl Jam - The Fixer
The Fixer....
Listen here.
[Everytime I hear this song, I think of Eddie Vedder singing this song to his beautiful little girl.]
When something’s on let me shed a little light on it
When something’s cold let me put a little fire on it
If something’s old I wanna put a bit of shine on it
When something’s gone I wanna fight to get it back again
Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah
Fight to get it back again
Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah
When something’s broke I wanna put a bit of fixin on it
If something’s bored I wanna put a little excited on it
If something’s low I wanna put a little high on it
If something’s lost I wanna fight to get it back again
Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah
Fight to get it back again
Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah
When signals cross, i want to put a bit of straight on it.
if there's no love, i want to try to love again.
I’ll say your prayers I’ll take your side
I promise a way to make light
I'll dig your grave
We'll dance and sing
What's saved could be one last lifetime
Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah
Fight to get it back again
Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah

Meiko: Boys with Girlfriends
I know better than this...
I accidentally saw Meiko at SXSW '09. I had never heard of her... But the people I was standing with were total groupies. In fact, the Korean guy I met at The Parish had actually become a partial owner of "The Parish" bar in Austin, Texas because he was so in love with Meiko (and she plays there when she comes to town ;-)
And, needless to say, she was very talented and extremely humble ;-) I'm hooked!!
And here's the song that has catapulted her to instant stardom: Live version here.
BOYS WITH GIRLFRIENDS
when i first met you
i knew you were the one
till you took me home and met her
she had your boxers on
she was listening to your song
and i thought right then that you had everything
but i knew
she was jealous from the start
yeah i knew
she was jealous from the start
cos i know better not to be friends with boys with girlfriends
oh i know better than that i know better
you play the victim and i'll be the bad guy
i know better than that, i know better
(oh oh oh oh oh oh X 2)
we started hanging around after 9
i couldve sworn you i was yours
you looked at me and said
its a little too late for bed
we went to stayed up all night and
talked about everything
but i knew
she was jealous from the start
yeah i knew
she was jealous from the start
cos i know better not to be friends with boys with girlfriends
oh i know better than that i know better
you play the victim and i'll be the bad guy
i know better than that, i know better
(oh)
what she did to us was tragic
oh oh oh
and i have to do what's right
oh oh oh
what we had was really magic
oh oh oh
but i have to get what's mine
oh
i don't get what's mine
and you get yours
cos i know better not to be friends with boys with girlfriends
oh i know better than that i know better
you play the victim and i'll be the bad guy
i know better than that, i know better
(oh)

A.A. Bondy - Lover's Waltz
Such a beautiful song!
Listen here.
Do you wanna dance?
Will you wear my ring?
Will you lay with me?
Until the final bullets sing...
Over our heads, over our heads..
Then a lovers' waltz will turn until the end.
Will you marry me?
Don't you wanna spin?
Will you run with me?
Until the ground folds us within.
Over our heads, over our heads.
And a lovers' waltz will turn until the end,
And your shipwreck eyes,
They sing to me,
As we ride a killer whale,
Across a diamond sea.
Over our heads, over our heads...
And a lovers' waltz will turn until the end.
And I will hang for you,
And you will hang for me,
And the northern lights.
Will take us in like refugees,
Over our heads, over our heads.
And a lovers' waltz will turn until the end.

Josh Ritter: Bright Smile (Dark Eyes)
Bright Smile - Josh Ritter - Whelans 22/10/09
Watch here.
Lyrics to Bright Smile :
Now my work is done
I feel I'm owed some joy
Oh Imogene and Abelard
I'm your homeward boy
But there's another one
Who brings me to your door
And the boat she weaved from the tidal reeds
Was always tied to shore
With bright smiles and dark eyes
Bright smile dark eyes
Everywhere I went oh
I was always searching for ya
Bright smile dark eyes
I'm looking for some peace
But it's so hard to find
With Calamity Janes and the Steamboat Casanovas
And Darling Clementines
If she's your only one
Then she is also mine
Just pin your heartbeat up against my heartbeat
And you'll see how well we rhyme
With bright smiles and dark eyes
Bright smile dark eyes
Everywhere I went oh
I was always looking for ya
Bright smile dark eyes
Man is only half himself
The other half is a bright thing
He tumbles on by luck or grace
For man is ever a blind thing
Bright smiles and dark eyes
Bright smile dark eyes
Everywhere I went oh
I was always looking for ya
Bright smile dark eyes

Billy Bragg - Walk Away Renee
Billy Bragg Walk Away Renee Lyrics:
On YouTube here... and here. (JUST KIDDING about that second link ;-)
She said it was just a figment of speech
And I said you mean 'figure'
And she said no 'figment' because she
could never imagine it happening
But it did
When we first met, I played the shy-boy
When she spoke to me for the first
time, my nose began to bleed
She guessed the rest
The next day we went on a bus ride to the ferry
And when nobody came to collect our
fares, why I knew then this was
something special.
I couldn't stop thinking about her
And everytime I switched on the radio,
there was somebody else singing
a song about the two of us.
It was just like being on a fast ride at Fun
Fair - the sort you want to get off...
because it's scary and then, as soon as
you're off again, you want to
get straight back on again
But oh love is strange
And you have to learn to take the
crunchy with the smooth I suppose
She began going out with Mr. Potato Head
It was when I saw her in the car park with
his coat around her shoulders
that I realized
I went home and thought about the two of
them together until the bath
water went cold around me
I thought about her eyes and the curve of
her breasts and about the point
where their bodies met...
I confronted her about it
I said 'I'm the most illegible bachelor in town'
And she said 'Yea, that's why I can never
understand any of those stupid
letters you send me.'
And then one day it happened,
She cut her hair,
And I stopped loving her.

Alexi Murdoch - Song for You

I love Alexi Murdoch...
This is a stunning video as well.
"So today, I wrote a song for you,
'Cause a day can get so long.
And I know it's hard to make it through,
When you say there's something wrong.
So I'm trying to put it right,
'Cause I want to love you with my heart,
All this trying has made me tight.
And I dont know even where to start...
Maybe that's a start.
'Cause you know its a simple game..
That you play filling up your head with rain.
And you know you are hiding from your pain.
In the way, in the way you say your name.
And I see you,
Hiding your face in your hands.
Flying so you won't land,
You think no one understands,
No one understands.
So you hunch your shoulders and you shake your head,
And your throat is aching but you swear,
No one hurts you, nothing could be sad,
Anyway you're not here enough to care.
And you're so tired you dont sleep at night,
As your heart is trying to mend,
You keep it quiet but you think you might,
Disappear before the end.
And its strange that you cannot find,
Any strength to even try...
To find a voice to speak your mind,
When you do, all you wanna do is cry.
Well maybe you should cry...
And I see you hiding your face in your hands,
Talking 'bout far-away lands,
You think no one understands,
Listen to my hands.
And all of this life,
Moves around you.
For all that you claim,
You're standing still,
You are moving too...
You are moving too...
You are moving too...
I will move you."

Not What You Think It Is
from the album "Postcards and Daydreaming" by Dan Mangan.
you would think that keeping up would be easier.
livin’ large and livin’ strange,
you’ll bend yourself.
summertime, it always seems to come creeping up.
keep in mind, you want it to.
when you’re cold and you’re tired, hurt and you’re sad.
for all that you’ve given, for all that you’ve had.
it’s not what you think it is.
you would think that livin’ large and livin’ well
will wear ya down and wear ya thin and where ya goin?
don’t you know i’m grumpy
when the time is right,
when the time is on my side?
maybe you could fix me up,
i could do the same for you and maybe sometime soon,
we can spend some time alone to talk about the things we should talk about.
tell me ’bout the time when everything’s a mess,
tell me ’bout the time - I haven’t heard it yet,
tell me ’bout the time,
tell me ’bout the time,
tell me ’bout the time.
all you need is time.
when you’re cold and you’re tired.
when things just aren’t well.
frightened of strangers and scared of yourself.
it’s not what you think it is.
when you’re strung out,
when there’s hell to pay,
when you’re holding out for some better day,
when your feet are inspired,
when you need some fresh air.
with your fingers on fire, release it all there.
it’s not what you think it is.
